Sevilla maravilla

There is nothing left to say. This video says more than words could express...IT WAS AWSOME!!!

It is one of those Thursday afternoons. I am sitting yet again in the computer lab of my university, yet again suffering from a lack of Internet connection at my new place. Waking up with the urge to post a little something in English, since it has been quite a while, I took a shower, got dressed and walked 20 minutes in cloudy but finally warm weather to school. On my way here I encountered a lot of oranges laying on sidewalks and streets, either mushed or still wholesome, I even witnessed a tourist-couple slipping on one those squished oranges and falling down...That makes me wonder: What happened last night in Elche? Did I miss some big Orange Show-Down?
I guess that will always be a mystery to me.
Back to my actual urge of giving an English update of my Spanish life en Elx/Elche. It is March and over 6 months have passed since I arrived here all sweaty and nervous. The sweat is gone due to cooler temperatures but its shaping up to be more springy, warmer, more Spain. I recently moved into a new place right in the center and to my delight very close to the best Italian ice-cream place Elche has to offer. Not only is it located very nicely but it also only costs me 100 Euro a month. Thinking of the German price-range my wallet is making jumps and is now more willing on spending more money on travel-adventures and the occasional of course very needed addition to my ever-growing wardrobe. So far it had bought me a weekend trip to Madrid, Spain's lively capitol right in the center of the country. You really cannot miss it. And while there I caught a show of Vampire Weekend, my secret obsession over the past so to speak YEAR.
Madrid greeted me with sunshine and to also show off its versatility with one rainy day. It took a while to grow on me. Its not as charming as Barcelona and Valencia are. The plazas are full of touristic-plastic stores, its a real quest to hunt down a nice creative postcard and little interesting art stores. But if you let it sink in and give it some time it will show you its point of view, its view of life and its very own way of being Spanish. La Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Prado, Reina Sofia...latter is a true find when looking for Modern Art, Installations and stuff.
Also the RASTRO on Sunday morning, a crowded flea-market where you can buy everything from the vintage leather couch to haipins and underwear and olives. Just watch out for your belongings! Being warned a million times I kept all my goodies save in my pockets and paranoid "ly"checked them every 5 seconds, the downside of being in a bigger city like this.
For everyone who knows Vampire Weekend...they personally topped off my stay in Madrid like the cherry a sundae. Giddy like a 13-year-old I was awaiting their arrival in the circus-like Arena. They played a well executed set of both their records and ended with "Walcot don't you know that its insane, don't you wanna get out of Cape Cod, out of Cape Cod tonight" way too soon after it felt like they only played an hour. But they left the crowd and me all sweaty and happily humming and smiling. What a show!
Madrid, Worth a Visit, I'd say!

Tomorrow: Valencia, Las Fallas...Later hopefully beach when the sun is showing its face again. More in later episodes! promise!
So long!

Love

New Years in Spanish:
holding 12 grapes in a cup and waiting anxiously in front of the city hall for 2010 to start. Jacket covered in white foam and screaming kids all over. When the clock starts ringing in the new year you have to eat one grape each strike, in total 12 grapes and making a wish accompanying each grape into your mouth and down your throat.
Sounds easy.....waiting for our spanish friends to give us the start signal we already prepared our grapes to fall fast into our hands. NOW...grape 1 grape 2..oh STOP no not yet, dont eat them...not hearing a thing and my mouth full of grapes that I weren't supposed to swallow (for bad luck)...Out of the sudden, Fireworks : 2010 FELIZ AñO NUEVO, kisses hugs and champagne popping everywhere. Quickly stuffing all the other 8 grapes in my mouth, world peace being the fastest wish I could think of to accompany my big grape swallow...2010...here it comes

Feliz Navidad y bueno año nuevo

I have given up on posting bilingual, its too much work and since everyone I know speaks pretty good English as well I will continue in English and maybe from time to time in German.

Christmas is drawing closer and also the excitement of going home to see family and friends back in Germany. Escaping unheated houses and the occasional cockroach. Coming home to cold temperatures, Christmas markets, hot wine, chocolate and down time.
Time to resume a bit over the past 3 months spent in Elche, Spain.

Erasmus has been a wild ride: meeting lots of different people, going to the beach in november, eating in the middle of the night and for that matter not sleeping much...First the language class in September, not understanding much, struggling signing up for classes, then actual Uni started, slowly improving, making friends, bonding with spanish culutre, lots of dinners, trips to Valencia, Murcia, Barcelona, San Pedro...
FAQs aquí en Elx: people speak Valenciano (mix of castellano and cataln); dogs here are rarely cute, more like ugly, mostly fast and tiney but harmless and very laid back like their owners; dont stress dont rush, things will work out somehow but dont expect them to rapidly; Gestures make up for the lack of language proficiency and everyone is very helpful; houses dont have heating systems and are not built proberly entonces it gets more freezing inside than outside at times; DO NEVER STEP on a COCKROACH, those things are all over...Tapas are amazing I recommend patatas bravas, calamares, queso frito and chupitos for after.

I wish everyone a peaceful christmas-season and a happy new year!!!!

Barcelona me encanta

Barca...me encanta
Day 1, Dec 3rd 9pm: Vueling Air takes off going east, bringing us (Toni, Katha, Lina and I) closer to the city of our dreams: Barcelona! Due to delays, long lines we arrived at midnight in our piso for the next 5 days. Right around the Corner of Sagrada Familia we got 2 beds to sleep in for free (THANKS GREOGOR & JON!!!)...flying in, unrolling sleeping bags, passing out...PS its amazing hwat kind of carry-on vueling air lets you bring onto the plane. Well we are just girls after all
Day2, Dec 4th: Breakfast with bocadillos, tea and cafe solo next to the Sagrada Familia; later Barrí Gotic strolling down its narrow passageways, discovering tiny gems, buying postcards, stamps, rings and buttons in all variations, drinking coffee in sweet little cafes, checking out art printed on doors all over town, walking down Las Ramblas, seeing the sea, seagulls...Sleep
Day3, Dec 5th: Early Riser, off to see Gaudí's "La Pedrera", walking around L'Exaimple and soaking up the atmosphere of Gucci, Muji and other pricy stores and its costumers; Experiencing a lunch with soup in a trendy new place where you microwave your own food (Great Idea, poorly executed), followed by coffee and dinner at Madams cuisine: Distracted by her well being very well "endowed" we ordered egg-plant, couscous and red wine. Topped off by Gofres caliente (Waffles in Catalan) with dark Xocolate...Exhaustion and bed
Day4, Dec 6th: its sunday and St. Nikolaus, we didnt put our boots out but we git fresh bread and lots of sun for breakfast.Off to the Picasso Museum (Free on the first sunday each month) with its special exhibit on his erotic Japanese prints. Afterwards entering the other side of the Ramble: Raval: a multicultural district full of falafel and döner bars, after lots of garlic-sauce we made our way back to the Sagrada Familia to witness an advent mess inside in Catalan...It truly is a sermon built in stone.
Day5, Dec 7th: Parc Güell, Gaudí's Garden Project which wasnt quite finished but turned out to be a gigantic tourist magnet, enjoying sun with 26°Celsius we strolled around greens and mosaics, trying to avoid the crowd and staying off the road, afterwards exploring Barca's rather "new" Gràcia with its artstores and playgrounds. Ending with hot chocolate and tea yet again our last night in Barcelona has dawned...
Day6th, Dec8th: Rising at 4am, catching a plane at 7am back to Elx, Barca waves us goodbye with its first sunbeams of the day, hasta luego, Barca me encanta!
I will be back for sure.
Besos a todos

San Pedro/Las Negras...Hip to be there

scroll down for english!
So trugen alle Frauen schwarz.

September, feel like beach, sun, fun, camping, relaxing and even more?
Claro que si! Packed with tents, sleeping bags, lots of sun screen, towels, tons of food and liquid goodies we took off for a weekend in Andalusia. Heading for a hidden "hippie" beach to rest our busy minds and soak up some sun. After a 2 1/2 hour drive in our rented cars we arrived in Las Negras.
Las Negras got its name after a big horrible storm which got most of the men in the village working as fishermen killed in reaction to that all the women dressed in black...(I owe that story to Ita Atz)
We, meaning 7 Germans and 2 Italians, made our way through the mountainside packed with all we needed and more. After an hour climbing, dangerously slipping and sliding while carrying stuffed backpacks, tents, tequila and rum bottles we spotted a well with naked people and a short steep "downstairs" climb later the SEA. Deep blue sea!Cooling off in the salty waves followed by tent construction 101 and settling in Paradise. Paradise it was. Sun, beach, sand...DINNER with salad, wine, tuna, bread, cheese, more wine and later other liquids. Swimming in the sea till dawn, talking, strolling down the beach, falling asleep to the sound of the waves rushing in, waking up to sunshine and sand everywhere. Instead of shower swimming, playing volleyball, hanging out....BEST CUACEMOLE ever thanks to Jo!!! fresh bread, sandy cheesy, fruit and tuna for breakfast/lunch...
Around 4 pm on sunday it was about time to pack up and get on our way back home to Elx and leave Paradise behind ...Till next summer. Ta logo!

Spanische Impressionen

Angekommen

Scroll down for English

Hola meine Lieben,
Also Saludos a todos.
Besitos.
Marie

Hi there
I have finally arrived in Elche/Alicante/Valencia/Spain...Moved into my piso this sabado, my future roommates havent moved in yet so until now Im all by myself. Well I am not completely alone as I have met tons of people, mostly Germans so far, whom I am hanging out with most of the time. Last week was busy with trying to hunt down a place to live, enroll in University, move all my belongings from ALicante to Elche/Elx. In case you want to know more about Elche/Elx: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elche
I am too lazy to post any information myself. Notice how they have their own dialect Valencian. Streetsigns are printed in both languages...so if you though Spain only has 3 more official languages besides Castilian you are wrong. Every regions seems to have its own dialect with their own words and phrases. Makes it even more difficult for me to not only having to try to understand the Spanish they speak so incredibly fast but alos having to figure out if they are actually speaking complete different dialect.
As for the weather, it has been cooling off a bit, meaning its not over 30 degrees Celsius anymore, but still enough to go to the beach and wear shorts all day and night. The university is incredibly modern und cool. the campus is huge and there is tons of Palm-trees all over. Elche is known for its Palmeral de Elche (World heritage of UNESCO 2000). There is vending machines for everything...drinks, food, post-its, pens...you actually just gotta wake up, get some money and go to class. To Americans this might sound rather familiar but to us Germans that is a whole new sceneray.
My language class started yesterday and I already called my teacher ham, his name is Ramón and you have to roll the R very r-ish, not like a ch (what I did) otherwise it turns out like my little language faux-pas: JAMON=Ham. Of course I have met lots of people alreay. We have already been out in Alicante on sabado till 8 am...which brings me to the topic of my current lack of sleep. I hardly get enough of it and hardly get anything done. But I figure es Erasmus and the first lesson you learn here is : ¡Tranquilo! relax, take your time, dont worry...
So there is homework waiting for me to be done, attached you can see pictures that had been taken in Alicante, Elche, school, friends...all over.
Saludos a todos.
besitos

Ankunft- Hola España!!!

Scroll down for English

Hi there,
so much happening the past couple of days. Im sitting in an internet cafe night now so my time online is only limited. Im trying to put the past events in chronicle order: excuse my lack of wit, its too hot to be funny and smart right now.
1. I got to Alicante all right, 6 hours layover in Mallorca passed rather quickly (thinking of publishing a guide to: how to spend 6 hours at an airport)I even made it to the hostel with all my heavy luggage, I was soaking wet when finally all settled. Its about 36 Degrees Celcius here...
2. I met an Estonian girl at the airport and she is staying at my hostel as well, we have been hanging out a lot. Also met some Aussies who took us out for beers. Turned out to be a great first night full of Paella, vino and cerveza.
3. Sunday/domingo we spent mostly at the beach not doing much and checking otu the area.
4. Today we actually got a phone card, Quite a Quest...noone wanted to sell phonecards to us. but we managed.YAY. Im proud, even ran into a french girl who helped us out with our rusty spanish. Another new number to my contact list in Spain.
Tomorrow I will be going to Elche where my school is and try to find a place to stay for the next semester. Unfortunately you seem to only be able to call people for vacant rooms, no e-mails whatsoever, me and my spanish...should be fun.
My Computer is screwing with me so I cannot get WiFi right now and have to use the I-net cafe, thats why I cannot upload any pictures...for now.
Let me just say this: Palm-trees, ocean, beach, tapas, sun sun sun...you get the picture ;-)
Ill be in touch. write me write me!!!!
Take care everyone!
Besitos

Saludos Alemana. Still not fully packed and organized. Time is running out unbelievably fast. Have long been giving up on my stomach to finally calm down. All part of the adventure I am going to embark on very shortly.
